About this book
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. An alarm clock is a clock that is designed to make a loud sound at a specific time. The primary use of these clocks is to awaken people from their sleep in order to start their days in the mornings, but can also be used for short naps; they are sometimes used for other reminders as well. To stop the sound, a button or handle on the clock needs to be pressed, and some stop automatically after a few minutes if left unattended. A classical analog alarm clock has an extra hand that is used to specify the time at which to activate the alarm. Traditional mechanical alarm clocks have one or two bells that ring, but digital alarm clocks can make other noises. Simple battery-powered alarm clocks make a loud buzzing sound, or other similar noise to wake a sleeper, while novelty alarm clocks can speak, laugh, or sing. Some alarm clocks have radios that start playing at specified times, and are known as clock radios. A progressive alarm clock, still new in the market, can have different alarms for different times (see Next-Generation Alarms).

Best Alarm Clock we Ever Owned - Called a Dream Machine and it really is!

When our old alarm went out I had to find a new alarm quickly. When I found the Sony ICF-C318, I was just happy to discover it had no external antennae to deal with. What a bonus to find that not only was it small and inexpensive, but had no funky extra wires. It has two alarms & the time and date are automatically set! All I did is plug it in. The date was automatically correct. And if there's a power surge or power outage, it has a battery back-up (battery is included and already installed) and it loses no time. We didn't believe that, of course, and had to play with it by unplugging it a few times to test it, but it worked great! We didn't even have to re-set the time zone. Also, I usually had to re-set the alarm for my husband, but no longer. I set the A alarm for me and the B alarm for him and we are done. What I also found wonderful about this alarm was that when you set the alarm time, you can go backward or forward. Our old alarm could only go forward and it took... 5/5 K. Easy, accurate, but politely quiet

I bought two of these, (one for my husband and one for my teenage son), since they would automatically reset themselves after a power outage. They both immediately complained that the alarms were not loud enough, (both are VERY heavy sleepers). It does have a very light and polite beep with no volume control. However, the beeps gradually increase in frequency and after week of use, both of them are waking up easily to the sound and without the jarring blasts from our old alarms. So, it may require getting accustomed to for heavy sleepers, but it's great for those of us who don't like to be blasted awake every day. 4/5 K. Dual Alarm Function Worth It

Two alarm feature very easy to program. All functions work great. Battery backup and automatic time updates. I bought a more expensive Sony multi-alarm clock a few months ago and it works OK, but this clock is by far a better and less complicated unit. 4/5 G. Great little clock

This clock is wonderful. It doesn't take up a lot of room, buttons are easy to handle even if you have get up in the middle of the night and the green color is much calmer than the glaring red, most clocks have. 5/5 R. Inexpensive & Easy to Use

So easy to set & price is right. Radio works good too.2 seperate alarms, radio or beep. Time is correct out of the box - that's the only "automatic time set" in play here - -1 star for the "automatic time set" which isn't really... Battery backup built in - not a 9v, aaa or aa...looks like it will last - round, flat battery of some type like a watch battery, only larger.3 settings for display. The lowest is dim enough not to bother me and the highest is fairly bright - low is tough to see in full daylight..Good value here IMHO. A FANTASTIC LITTLE CLOCK RADIO!

This is a great little clock! It doesn't take up much space, but it has features that you would expect to find on a larger, more expensive clock. It is super-easy to operate, too. It has dual alarms - each can have either buzzer/music to wake you up. The radio has a wonderful sound to it. The time display has 3 settings. I'm sensitive to light, and sometimes the lowest setting on some clocks can be too bright. But, on this clock, the lowest setting is just perfect. You get so many features in this clock and you'd think you'd have to pay a lot more money for it, but you don't! 5/5 Margie in Philly (Philly, PA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) ICF-C318/BC: simple, intuitive and improved

This clock radio shares an obvious family resemblance to its highly successful predecessor, the : 90% of the buttons and functions of the earlier version are implemented and placed identically in the newer model. The buttons and their labeling are so intuitive that a manual is hardly needed (but helpful for the Sleep and Time Zone buttons). The ICF-C318 possesses four new buttons, switches and controls and a feature that make it a more desirable model than the earlier one: a 3-level brightness button, a two-level buzzer volume switch, a second alarm mode rotary switch, a second alarm time setting control, and most importantly, the 'No Power No Problem' feature means the alarm will still sound even if the AC power is off when the alarm was set to ring. The efficacy of those new contols... 5/5 Hugh Phillips (Andover, MN United States) - See all my reviews, March 11, 2008

    Jumbo number easy to read

I have the unit running for a month now. Recently, my house lost the power for one day due to the rain storm. The display on the clock went off too even though I have the battery in it. When the power is back in service, the clock has the correct time. I can see it from space!

~UPDATE 10/14/2010~Well I will have to take back my "Feels and looks cheaply made..." con as I have knocked this clock off of the window sill about a dozen times onto a hard surface and it keeps on ticking. No visible signs of damage on it anywhere from the falls. It still looks cheaply made, but can apparently take a beating!~UPDATE~I needed a clock in my bedroom because I finally got rid of my VCR (it was the only reason I kept the VCR because it was the only clock in the room LOL).It's HUGE almost 2" LED backlit numbers are easy and clear to see way across the room, even in bright light. At night, no issue at all!It keeps time perfectly too. If you are looking for a cheap and easy to read clock, this is probably one of your best choices.Pros:Easy to see in bright and dim light.Battery backup, so you don't have to reset it after the power goes out.Power cord is just the right length, not too... 4/5 J. This will wake you up

I've had a history of sleeping through alarm clocks. This past summer I lived with a few other people and they would come into my room in the morning and yell at me, because my old alarm would wake them up but I would sleep through it, despite the fact that it was positioned right next to my head. While I do not believe this alarm reaches 113 decibels or that it is louder than a jackhammer, I will say that it is much louder than your standard alarm clock. The vibrator works very well and is guaranteed to wake up even the deepest of sleepers. You can put it under your mattress, which will cause the majority of it to vibrate, or you can place it against a solid object which will cause a loud vibrating noise. I opted to keep mine under my mattress. Many people have posted that their units burned out or that it kept time incorrectly. This is because they failed to look at the directions. In the directions that come with the alarm clock there is information detailing... 4/5 Matthew C. Clodfelter "Halfy" (Hughesville, MD USA) - See all my reviews, February 25, 2010

    Sledge-Hammer Alarm Substitute

I was desperate to find an alarm that would wake me up in the morning. I joked with my husband about finding one that has a sledge-hammer to clock me in the head, because I just couldn't wake up in the morning.I was setting an alarm clock, my cell phone clock, and having my husband calling on his way to work and I was sleeping through all of it!I found this on Amazon and I am astounded at how well it works. The disk goes right under the mattress and it literally vibrates (in bursts) the whole bed. It's not what it sounds like...it's not going to collapse the bed or damage anything...the disk is the size of a large hockey puck and is self contained in it's vibration. The decibel level of the alarm, although doesn't seem much different from other clocks...is unique in its tone and pitch. It has a louder and "stronger" sound (if that make sense). The lights, to me, are unnecessary, because between the shaking and the alarm, it's enough to wake me up... 5/5 Hoosiermama (CARMEL, IN USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great product if it works

I had to get my hands on the second copy before it worked as advertised. The first one I received couldn't keep the time properly. It might have been just a defective alarm clock, or it might have been the frequency setting in the back that fixed the new one.As far as 113 db, I don't have the wherewithal to measure it, but it's far from being deafening or absolutely startling. However, along with the alarm, which is louder than any other alarm I've heard, and the vibrating device underneath the bed, the combination should be enough for even the deepest sleepers. 4/5 S. Great Simple Alarm Clock

I bought this to replace my old alarm clock. It has a sleek design that takes up very little space. It has two alarms and can be set to radio, beeps or songs and has an adjustable snooze setting. The built in radio works well and there's a sleep setting so that if you like to fall asleep to the radio you can have it automatically shut off after a certain amount of time.It has an adjustable brightness level, but I found its default/highest level to be suitable. At that level it's bright enough to see in the dark, but not bright enough to keep me up. The alarm is easy to wake up to and gradually gets louder on the beep setting. It automatically set itself to the correct time and date as soon as I plugged it in, all I had to do is set the time zone. It has a DST feature that can be turned off or on.The only feature lacking is the ability to customize the alarm for either weekdays, weekends or both. It's not a big deal, especially with two alarms but it would have... 5/5 B. Jackson - See all my reviews, May 17, 2009

    Decent Alarm Clock

Decent alarm clock for the price.Pros: inexpensive, preset time, dst auto adjust, battery backup for power failure, easy to tune radio stations, easy to read display, brightness of display is adjustable.Cons: Alarm "A" can be set to chime or radio, Alarm "B" can only be set to chime or an electronic tune. Both alarms cannot be set to the radio. Cannot adjust or view the alarm setpoint unless the alarm is turned on, so when you pass the current time the alarm activates. Radio sound is poor but in line with the price of the alarm clock. The snooze can increased from 10 min to 20 min to 30 min etc, but if you hit the snooze button twice while initially silencing the alarm, you go straight to the 20 min snooze.Overall: a good alarm clock for the price but I would have paid more for a full featured clock radio had I know its limitations up front. 3/5 Jody & Dave (Cicero, NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony ICFC414 Clock Radio (Electronics) Decent alarm clock for the price.Pros: inexpensive, preset time, dst auto adjust, battery backup for power failure, easy to tune radio stations, easy to read display, brightness of display is adjustable.Cons: Alarm "A" can be set to chime or radio, Alarm "B" can only be set to chime or an electronic tune. BASIC BUT GOOD

The item description is very accurate. If you want a dual alarm clock radio similar to those from 10 years ago, that is exactly what you will get and that is why I ordered it. Nothing fancy, just basic but with the Sony dependability. There are a few nice things though - the time is preset, options for the dual alarms sound, adjustable brightness, battery backup, very easy to operate and the AM radio actually works well, unlike other clock radios. This clock radio has no frills but for the price, it is good and dependable. 5/5 Deborah M. Papallo "Debby" (CT) - See all my reviews, June 14, 2009

I used an Indiglo travel alarm as my main alarm for over ten years. Eventually, it stopped working. I have been on a quest to replace it ever since--about six years now. The main thing I've learned by trying so many other alarms is--it's hard to find a good, basic, no-frills, reliable alarm clock. Some alarms lose time. Some snooze for 10 or 15 minutes, which defeats the awakening process. Some are loud and/or obnoxious while others are barely audible. One couldn't keep time, AND after it fell off my nightstand--for the first time--the numbers became unreadable. A LOT are not Indiglo, and the backlights are so bright they could double as airstrip lighting; I've had to make them covers to dull the light so I could go to sleep.I finally gave up finding a suitable replacement at local stores, and started alarm clock shopping online. Pleasant Wake-Up Call

I've had this alarm clock for almost a month now and for the most part, am pleased with my purchase. The dual alarms are convenient; one time for M-F and another for weekends without having to manually change the setting every week. I know the time is always accurate - I can rest secure even if there's a power failure that I will get up on time. It's compact size doesn't take up too much room on the night stand. The red ceiling projection light is soft and non-disturbing, yet it does the job. The radio is just a convenient plus and use it to listen to weather forecasts. My one complaint is that the display light for the front of the clock is too bright, even in its 'dim' setting. It lights up my entire night stand - like having a 'night-light' plugged in. It's a bother on sleepless nights. When you turn it away from you, the ceiling projection is sideways. On the bright side, (pun intended), I don't have to switch on a light if I make a bathroom trip in the middle of the... 4/5 B. Nicolato (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, August 30, 2010

    Bright Night Stand

This clock is pretty good over-all. The radio is a nice feature but the speakers just don't quite cut it. Too much over-all distortion in the sound quality. The clock works well, and seems to maintain good time. Easy too use buttons and nice alarm features like M-F one time set. Two seperate alarms and the Clock does project very well plus the ability to flip your projection display 180 degrees. The one feature that needs improvement is the display light on the unit itself. It is so bright even in the dim mode that it lights up the room. So if you prefer to sleep in the dark you might want to think about this one feature. On the bright side I purchased this clock from Amazon and all was handled very well. Easy to purchase and delivery was as notified. 3/5 BusBarn - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great little radio/alarm clock!

I literally searched for months for a clock radio with certain features. I wanted all of these features in one unit: digital radio tuner, large number display, option to dim and/or turn off display light, two alarms, a time projection, easy to program, a small footprint, AND all that at a reasonable price. This little radio has all of that and then some. I love the weight of it...sturdy. It has a contemporary look and feel to it. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase. 5/5 East Tx Lilly (Texas) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good functionality and features, but a few design flaws

The Sharper Image Sound Soother has a very sleek and modern design, however, there are a few flaws that detract from the overall experience.First, the digital display is very bright in a dark bedroom. Unlike a regular, cheap alarm clock where only the time is lit, the entire display of the Sound Soother is backlit. If your bedroom has little ambient light at night, this display will emit a glow that some people may find too bright. Although there are three display brightness settings, there is little difference between them and the lowest setting is still bright. We have to turn the clock away from the bed at night so it's not directly in our face, but the glow is still significant.Second, the sound quality could be better. This could be a tradeoff for the sleek design, but the sounds are not very natural coming out of the small rear speakers and are a bit tinny as another reviewer has noted. The volume control is not very good either, as the difference between... 3/5 Will Klinger (North Carolina) - See all my reviews, January 7, 2010

Much Better than regular Alarm Clocks

Found this sound soother at QVC for $36.50. I hated waking up to a loud "give-me-a-heart-attack" buzzers on regular alarm clocks and was hunting for a more soothing wake-up call. The beep on this clock is ok not near as screeching as some other clocks I've tried. The sound system and its many nature sound options are great. I don't know why other buyers complain about the quality of the sounds, they must miss their big ole stereo system or something, its just a clock people duh! I love the rainforest sound and the summer night as well as the oceanside waves. I chose most often to set the alarm to the foghorn, its a nice soft realistic sound of boats in the harbor. If you're a deep sleeper, the beep probably would be better to use. I found the manual for this too sparse on instructions. There was no instructions on how to set either the beep or the sound option, by accident I found out how. The luminous figures are not too bright, good grief I can't believe other buyers... 4/5 L. Falls short

I had high hopes for this - thinking it was similar to a clock I saw a few years ago and can't seem to find now. Those of you who are light sleepers will appreciate the sound library. The digital recordings have long loops and sound pretty good, but the speakers are on the tinny side. I like to sleep with a surf sound and that is decent. The problem is the alarm (which wasn't even covered in my manual). The alarm allows you to wake with either a beeper or a sound. The problem is if you sleep with a sound playing, that is the same one used for the alarm - so it doesn't quite work! I was hoping you could set different sounds for the alarms. The clock I saw a few years ago allowed you to listen to surf but the alarm added in foghorns or other related sounds. That was pretty cool! If anyone knows what clock I am talking about, please let me know. Don't be too disappointed if the Sound Soother isn't available on Amazon. It is available at Best Buy for the same price. 2/5 David (Stillwater, Mongolia) - See all my reviews, January 1, 2010

DE review of Elgin Alarm Clock Model #3655E

This model is a great alarm clock to use for either nostalgia, to use for a desk clock (like I do), or for a regular alarm clock. It has a lighted dial, and a snooze feature - both which are operated by pressing down on the handle of the clock. The pewter finish goes great with my black and gray decor on my computer desk, and would be great for any modern setting, while still looking like an old fashioned clock to boot!It also has a loud alarm that would be good for people who need an alarm clock to wake them up, but not one that needs winding every day, as it takes one 'C' battery. The ends of the hands are also illuminated for night viewing when the lighted dial feature is not activated. For the money, it is a great buy, and unlike the other poster, I've had my clock with the same battery in it for the past year, and it hasn't drained down yet! 5/5 D. Great Clock just what i was looking for

Nice Clock. Looks like sterling silver so shiny. Reminds me of the old fashioned wind up clock, without having to wind it up though. I definitely prefer the bell sound in the morning rather than the loud and annoying beep of a digital alarm clock. But it has the optional digital alarm sound if you prefer that to switch between. Only thing is I haven't figured out anyway to discern between am and pm settings, so once you set your alarm to go off, it more than likely will go off at the time morning and night(ex. 9:30 am and pm). Overall, I'm very pleased with this clock it looks really good it my bed room; very good design and craftsmanship. 5/5 S. carter (nc) - See all my reviews, November 11, 2010

    Good value!

I was a little nervous because another reviewer said this clock ran on a C battery and drained quickly, however when mine arrived, it just took 2 regular AA batteries. I have not had a problem with the batteries draining. The button to make it light up in the dark is on the bottom of the clock, so when its sitting on your nightstand you just push down on the top handle and it illuminates the clock face. I really like that it has the option of 'twin bell' or 'beeping' alarms. The clock looks great! Definitely am happy with my purchase; good value for the money. 5/5 L.
