  Terrific, though it's not what you expect....

  I find 'The American' a hard sell as a film. It's not an action-thriller like the trailers make it out to be, nor would I call it a character drama or art house piece. I can't see either of these audiences appreciating this film on the level it wants you to. I think that's why I like it so much, there's nothing else like it in theaters (at least not right now).'The American' is about cold-blooded professional "Jack" who, after being attacked in Sweden with his girlfriend (which ends violently but not the way you think) is directed by his associate to hide out in a small town in Italy. He ends up friending a priest and a prostitute and takes a job building/modifying a weapon for an assassin. Of course his old enemies catch up to him but the movie chooses more to focus on the main character's slow change from cold-professional to 'maybe' redeemable human being.   "The American" is a superbly crafted, visually captivating and subtle character driven drama with an incredibly 70's European style and sensibility. Be warned those looking for an action filled generic thriller will be severely disappointed. This is an artful character study about a troubled assassin nearing the end of what we can tell to be a long career. The general tone of the film mirrors that of the characters personality, a tense and emotionally reserved perfectionist. There is not too much emotion through much of the film because like its main character it is hard for him and the film to open up, or let anyone in. This is probably the most suspenseful film I have seen this year. It becomes hard to trust anyone he meets and I found myself becoming just as paranoid as he was at times. The performances were all wonderful, this was the most reserved I have seen Clooney since "Syriana". He played the character with such subtly and depth. I thought the end was fantastic.   Bad marketing/Evocative movie

  The American' is a quietly powerful story and badly marketed by Focus Features. This is a slow burn character study that is ultimately very close to a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's film 'Le Samourai'.Director Anton Corbijn and scribe Rowan Joffe have taken Martin Booth's novel and crafted a real masterpiece here. George Clooney gives a top 5 performance as an assassin with a moral crisis of sorts, and those who stick with this film are rewarded.BUT: It's definitely not for everyone. Those who are game for it are likely to become big fans. The film likely won't do much damage in the Oscar race, but that doesn't mean it isn't deserving of attention, because it definitely is.   Very broad stroke tale of Chris Kyle's career as a SEAL. Broad in the sense that there is very little detail on actual shots taken/contact with enemies (where he actually engaged targets in his capacity as a sniper).I was initially going to review the book after having read the first 30% of it which left me a bit disappointed but I decided to give it a chance, and finished it before re-writing my entire review. I fully agree with some of the previous reviews that the writing could have been better and I have to admit that I actually started wanting to skip all the passages written by Chris's wife (Taya) entirely.   Remarkable Story of A Truly Remarkable American Hero

  What a remarkable story of heroism, patriotism, and self-sacrifice by an even more remarkable American, Chris Kyle. A Navy SEAL and highly trained sniper, Kyle is even more remarkable in his straightforward admittance that his accomplishments alone are not to be lauded, but the accomplishments and sacrifices of his fellow military men who sacrificed their vision, limbs, and some ultimately their lives in fighting for the freedoms that we often take for granted, yet hold so dear.   Enjoyable and interesting

  While not high prose, this was a quick and interesting read. I totally support our troops and their actions so obviously am positively predisposed. However, I think that the authors story is fascinating and important. What our troops do to protect us should not be forgotten or dismissed. It is a pretty breezy and easy to read account of Chris' tours of duty and participation in many very important activities in the war. It is not a history book but one man's experiences during those historic moments. I found it very informative about a particular aspect of the SEALs and sniping in particular; both topics that I do not know a lot about. I enjoyed it and think that if you are interested in the war and or sniping then this is a worthwhile read.   These plug adapters are exactly what they look like, and they do their job well. If you are considering this 6-pack it means you probably have a lot of American things that you need to plug in to EU plugs, and more than likely it's because you'll be living somewhere for a while so aren't willing to get by with 1 or 2 universal adapters and rotating all your gadgets through them. Given that, here is what you should know:These adapters are designed to fit completely into the big, round EU plug, resulting in a very secure connection.   Much better than those flat adapters

  I recommend the round adapter for US 3-prong as well as 2-prong plugs. Why? Because it has a nice snug fit on both sides. This makes it much more stable in the Euro/Schuko socket unlike the flat 2-prong ones that in my experience tend to have a loose connection or even fall out of the socket - esp. if yours is a heavy cable or if it has one of those AD/DC converters at the plug end pulling down on the adapter. Plus, this adapter has a nice lip which makes it easier to pull out of the socket. Good quality for the price.   Worked great in France

  With a family of 5 spending two weeks in France, I knew that we'd need more than just a couple of these adapters. Six was perfect, but only because I also purchased the Universal Power Strip (VCT USP600 - Worldwide 110V / 220V / 240V Universal Power Strip / Surge Protector with 6 Universal Outlets Window Shutters & Circuit Breaker 15Amp for Use in Any Country). Together, this made keeping things charged and powered daily easy to do.We had (all dual voltage):1 laptop3 camera chargers2 cell phone chargers1 curling iron1 Nintendo DS chargerMostly, all but the curling iron worked off the Universal Power Strip. Hence that only required one of the six Schuko Outlet Plug adapters.I gave another to my wife for her curling iron and another to my son for his Nintendo DS charger for his room.
