What makes a watch Railroad Grade?

  • Nov 24, 2007 from speedmaster(Chris Meisenzahl)
speedmaster Railroad watches as made/improved/standardized by Webb C. Ball make a nice story. While the advent of cheap quartz movements has made this largely moot, I still find it interesting from the perspectives of both engineering and history. The most common Ball railroad watches are pocket watches.

The Pennsylvania Railroad, 1940s-1950s

Creator: Don Ball | Transportation - 1986-12-08

Traces the history of the railroad during the height of its success, looks at its locomotive and rolling stock, and shares employee anecdotes

Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company

About this book
The Pennsylvania Railroad called itself "the Standard Railroad of the World, " and perhaps it was. It had bigger boundaries, larger revenues, and a larger public debt than many small nations. It paid the longest continous dividend of any company on the New York Stock Exchange. The Pennsylvania Railroad was incorporated by the Pennsylvania State Legislature on April 13, 1846 and was ultimately egineered and constructed into the nation's largest railroad. While moguls tinkered with their railroads for personal gain, enormous fortunes and social status, the men of the Pennsylvania strictly adhered to superior engineering, sound, conservative fiscal policy and the constant practice of designing, testing and building the wares they used on their Railroad. Standardization of the best designs, utilizing interchangeable parts, patterns, castings, etc. was carried out to the degree that "outsiders" considered the Pennsylvania Railroad radically ecumenical, insular, possessing a culture of its own.

A "must have" for every Pennsy fan

This is one of the "must have" books for every fan of the PRR. The color photos from the 1940s and 1950s (which make up the bulk of the book) are classic images of the railroad before its decline, and the text (which is limited to about the first 35 pages, plus photo captions, helps the reader understand the Pennsylania Railroad and its operations, particularly in the eastern half of the system. For those seeking more "technical" information, Staufer's Pennsy Power series will have more data, but the photos found here will complement the data found there. Those looking for historical information will some find some historical data here, although they may also be interested in Burgess & Kennedy's Centennial History of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Messer & Roberts' Triumph series, or in Rush Loving's book, The Men Who Loved Trains. There are also numerous other volumes published on the PRR, including many from smaller publishers. 5/5 Frederick Monsimer (Norristown, PA USA) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2007

Excellent Color Pictorial of the PRR in the 40's & 50's

Ball and his cohorts have assembled an excellent collection of color photos of the PRR. Coverage is biased to the eastern end of the system, but this is not bad. There is an interesting story of the testing of early electric locomotives at the start of this book. A must for any true pennsy fan. 5/5 SuperG - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Pennsylvania Railroad: 1940s-1950s (Hardcover) This history of the famous Pennsylvania Railroad is written in style and understanding by Don Ball Jr that is unmatched, in my opinion, for quality and the author's passion and love for the American railroad saga. Don Ball Jr. died just before the distribution of this book in 1986. He did not get to sign the Limited First Edition of 1600 copies, so has widow Linda did so in his place. He was a gentleman with whom - coming across in his writing - I would enjoyed a chat across a dinner table. The photography is superb for model builders, history seekers, and those who enjoy quality composition and information flow. The quality of the printing is excellent.
