Take Your Eye Off the Ball, How to Watch Football by Knowing Where to Look

Creator: Pat Kirwan, David Seigerman, Bill Cowher | 2010-08-01

Provides fans the skills to watch a football game by showing readers how to compile data from a game, introducing the players and their roles, and mastering the NFL draft.

Publisher: Triumph Books (IL)

About this book
While more and more football fans are watching the NFL each week, many of them don't know exactly what they should be watching. What does the offense's formation tell you about the play that's about to be run? When a quarterback throws a pass toward the sideline and the wide receiver cuts inside, which player is to blame? Why does a defensive end look like a Hall of Famer one week and a candidate for the practice squad the next? Now Pat Kirwan, popular analyst for NFL.com and Sirius NFL Radio and a veteran front office executive, and co-author David Seigerman present Take Your Eye Off the Ball, a book that takes you inside a coach's mind as he builds a roster or constructs a game plan, to the line of scrimmage with the quarterback, and deep into the perpetual chess match between offense and defense.

    Succinct and very informative

So glad that I got this book. I never played football myself, being the proverbial 80 lb weakling. But, I love football and try to find cost effective matierials like this whenever I can.The author assumes that the reader is a somewhat proficient student of the game and doesn't waste time with simplistic explanations of what the positions are called or what the rules of football are. This book is aimed at fans familiar with the game.'Eye Off The Ball' gives some of the best descriptions of position strategies, player responsibilities, why responsibilities developed the way they did and what attributes are important in the player for a given position. It explains the coaches eye for the game, how fans can misinterpret what is happening on the field and what they should consider as alternative points of view.Pat is amazingly succinct and there are times that you'll find yourself wishing he had spent more time on a subject. Otherwise, the book is... 4/5 Todd Sharp (Plano, TX USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Take Your Eye Off the Ball: How to Watch Football by Knowing Where to Look (Paperback) So glad that I got this book. Fantastic Book for the Football Purist

This is a fantastic book if you're a football fan and you want to know more details of how the game is played. I've been interested in football (I love the game) for more than 20 years and was itching to get a better picture of what goes on inside teams. For example, how they prepare for games, what are the responsibilities of the different coaches, etc. This book opens up a whole new level of understanding presented by someone who is clearly an expert and who has the resume to prove it. It has some great tips on just how to watch the game. I highly recommend this book! 5/5 Phil Hartley (Scottsdale, AZ) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Pro football for the layman

While I have never played a down of organized football myself, I still like to think of myself as a Hall Of Fame armchair quarterback. Not sure there are too many people I could convince on the veracity of that objective, but that's beside the point.Over the past few years, I've listened to the Sirius Radio NFL channel quite a bit. Pat Kirwan is a co-host of the Sirius show called MOVING THE CHAINS. I've been impressed by his football intellect as well as his understanding of the business side of the game of professional football. As a former NFL GM, he was kind of the anti-Matt Millen in the scope of his football erudition. It's for that reason that I was intrigued to buy this book, and it did not disappoint. While I fully understand the basics of football, Kirwan helped me to see how all the Chess pieces on the field fit together on both the offensive & defensive sides of the ball. There is a significant gap in the terminology of the game... 5/5 D. Don't underestimate how LOUD these are!

I had always wanted one of these, and finally got one a few years ago. I'm still very fond of it, but I rarely plug it in. It's fine if you're actually sitting and watching it, but there was nowhere I could put it in my house that the incessant clunking of balls wouldn't drive me nuts the rest of the time. Don't even *think* about putting one of these in a bedroom, unless it's occupied by somebody with severe hearing loss. Other than that, though, these clocks are fascinating and great fun. 4/5 aquapt (CA) - See all my reviews = Durability:, July 28, 2007

    Great Clock but not durable

I had the original ball clock back in the mid-70s but it didn't survive a move so when this version came out we bought a couple this time.Unlike the original, you don't have to put it together, which was a positive. Also unlike the original, the arm doesn't move constantly, which turns out to be both a positive and a negative. On the positive side, the arm moves faster than one revolution a minute, which means it is less likely to drop a ball, which happened often with the old clock. On the negative side, the gearing that keeps the arm stationary for most of the minute failed after 9 months, rendering the first clock useless. The arm moves constantly now, picking up several balls per minute. The second clock was found to have been put together slightly off true, so the balls get stuck in the vertical tube instead of rolling to the pickup point. So neither clock works now and they're not worth sending back for fixing, although I might try to swap the motors to see if I... 2/5 Mickey W. The best gift I ever bought my husband

My husband was thrilled with this gift. He had one as a child and talked about it often. He says he could just sit and watch it all day. It does not seem very durable, however, and the clear plastic case arrived with scratches on the sides and back. I'm not returning it though, because my husband is too enthralled with it. It's noisy but we just don't put it in our bedroom! 4/5 Angela Wolf "bookangel" (Hamburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews, March 24, 2008

This necklace arrived quickly and was exactly as pictured. I really wear it just because it looks so cool, but, for what it's worth, the clock keeps time well. 5/5 H. Leon (Virginia Beach, VA) - See all my reviews, November 28, 2011

    Accounts, Awards, Etc.,

That Heinz account is still at risk so it is Megan not Peggy to the rescue this time around. I must admit, it is a really good campaign idea. Megan is actually one of the few characters on this show who does not behave badly in everyday life. She certainly did not get this from her parents. They visit this week and are the epitome of being unlikable people. I don't know which of them I dislike more.I guess the living together concept got off the ground a little earlier on the east coast than it did in the midwest. I can't remember people admitting to doing this until the end of the sixties and into the seventies but we generally did follow later whatever was happening on the east and west coasts. So Peggy is at the leading edge of changing social mores by doing it. Her mother's attitude is typical of someone of that time period in middle age.The women are coming more together in this season than they did in any prior season. Peggy, Joan and Megan are not... 5/5 carol irvin "carol irvin" (United States) - See all my reviews, May 2, 2012

    Beautiful Letdown

It was subtle but so creative, just the like the pitch that won Mr. Heinz Exec over.Love the wife of the Heinz guy. She is lovely and fun to watch. The second to last scene of everyone surrounded by nice things but looking deeply troubled for obvious reasons was like a touching painting. Everyone made such a big deal about what Sally saw. I thought Pete flirting with Sally before dinner and the hypocritical, spiteful way Megan's parents treated each other was worse. Are Peggy and Joan becoming friends ? It was nice to see Joan giving Peggy pointers for her date. My mom has a little gold pencil from this era with her birthstone like Joan had around her neck. She got it for her birthday from an aunt. Alot of good lines esp between Mona, Sally and a friend from the past. Wish Stan would accidently fall out a window. He is like sand in my swimsuit and brings nothing to the show. Otherwise A++++ 5/5 simple sellers - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
