The Benefit and The Burden: Tax Reform-Why We Need It and What It Will Take
Book (Simon & Schuster)
List Price: $26.00
A great book for those that sleep on hearing tax policy
Bruce Bartlett's book "The Benefit and The Burden" is a good book for those of us that want to stay informed, but fall asleep the minute the discussion turns to Federal tax and spend policies. Written by a senior economist in the Reagan and Bush administrations it is surprisingly fair in pointing out where our politics has not been helpful in the debate on federal taxes and spending. Most of the explainations of economics and tax policies are clear and easy to understand without a degree in finance required. As a political independant I would love it if every voter read this before the 2012 election. 5/5 AZ Dry Humor - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A concise introduction to the current US tax system and the various proposals for tax reform. (Note that this is a public policy book, not a "how to" manual for taxes.) Explanations are rather spare and unelaborated; I had to re-read a few passages to get the gist of what he was saying. The author won't win any prizes for his prose, which is straightforward but dry, yet he writes with authority and is even-handed. He worked for Republican congressmen in the Reagan-Bush I era, but he has no affinity for the current Republican orthodoxy, especially its Tea Party strains. On the whole, I came away feeling much better informed about tax policy and, I admit, frustrated by the political obstacles that stand in the way of meaningful (and needed) reform. 4/5 R. Ricks (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews, February 14, 2012Excellent -
Bruce Bartlett's "The Benefit and the Burden" provides an easily readable, credible, and useful overview of American federal taxes and their impact. Bartlett also provides a number of improvement suggestions based on well-thought-out logic rather than useless ideology.Bartlett begins by pointing out that close to half of all tax filers either pay no federal income tax or get a refund - an obvious built-in incentive for expanding government spending. Then he covers recent macro-level changes, starting with Clinton's raising the top rate from 31% to 39.6% in 1993. Bush I had previously raised it from 28%, his 'No new taxes' pledge notwithstanding. Clinton's rate increase, however, was also accompanied by also increasing the threshold from $86,500 to $250,000. Clinton's actions were followed by rapid economic growth, declining Federal outlays (from 22.1% of GDP to 18.2%), and a 4.7% GDP deficit becoming a 2.4% surplus - all contrary to the dire predictions of opposing... 5/5 Loyd E. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations: A Collection of Passages, Phrases, and Proverbs Traced to Their Sources in Ancient and Modern Literature (17th Edition)
Book (Little, Brown and Company)
List Price: $50.00
Invaluable, authoritative, probably the "best"
Comparing this, the 17th edition of the best known and arguably the most authoritative collection of quotations ("familiar," memorable, or just plain quotable--you choose the terminology), to its predecessor the 16th edition, the question arises, should you upgrade? I own both books and have examined them in some detail. I have used the 16th for many years. The 17th is set in a new typeface which is both slightly narrower and less bold than that of the 16th. The result is a cleaner look to the pages and more white space. The difference in the number of pages--1431 for the new, 1405 for the old--is slight, and a little misleading. In fact the new edition has more entries--"around one hundred" authors are quoted for the first time, and some authors have additional entries. But the text in the 17th actually takes up less room. Its Index, for example, although it has more entries, has only 564 pages to 608 for the 16th. This is accomplished mainly because the narrower... 5/5 Dennis Littrell (SoCal) - See all my reviews, October 6, 2003Changes in new edition
It should be noted that some reviews here refer to editions PRIOR to the new 17th edition of Bartlett's. For example, Ronald Reagan's Berlin speech "...tear down this wall..." is included in this latest edition along with other updates and revisions. I would agree with others that it is probably worthwhile to hold onto earlier editions of timepieces/repositories of additional quotes that, with the march of time, get squeezed out of current and future edtions. Every home should have at least one of these in it though. Nice to see the positive influence of the weekly television treasure, SUNDAY MORNING with Charles Osgood. This book was entertainingly featured yesterday (12/8/02) and visiting Amazon[.com] today, I see the book's sales have jumped 28,150%! 5/5 Mike (United States) - See all my reviews, December 9, 2002still the best
Bartlett's is still the best resource for researching quotations, better than anything I found on the net, including a site that was called Bartlett's. The print Bartlett's does an excellent job of cross-referencing, so when I wanted to track the original source of a quotation, only the print Bartlett's solved the problem. That's why I bought this copy for my local library. Computers haven't solved every research problem yet. 5/5 spiketheartist (Phoenicia, NY United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Bartlett's Familiar Quotations: A Collection of Passages, Phrases, and Proverbs Traced to Their Sources in Ancient and Modern Literature (17th Edition) (Hardcover) Bartlett's is still the best resource for researching quotations, better than anything I found on the net, including a site that was called Bartlett's. When The Spirit Moves You (The Jeff Resnick Mysteries)
eBooks (Polaris Press)
List Price: $0.99
Jeff is Back! When the Spirit Moves You
Having bought and read all of the books and short stories in the Jeff Resnick series I jumped in and got this short story as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. When the Spirit Moves You gave me a fix until the next full length book comes out. No, I have no insider information. I am merely hopeful that the spirit will move Ms. Bartlett and she will take us once again into Jeff's slightly quirky world, again. I'd like to know what is going on in Jeff's love life, more about his job situation and also more about his sister-in-law. Just plain more! 5/5 N. Real Vampires Hate Skinny Jeans
Book (Berkley Trade)
List Price: $15.00
Who can't resist Glory??
Once again, Gerry Bartlett wrote an amazing book about our girl Glory St. Clare. I can relate to her struggle with a few extra pounds and wishing her body was a bit different. I WISH I could relate to her issues with her 3 hot guys! This book had brought back alot of people from Glory's past. They might might not be all her favorite people.... but it was good to see them again. The big thing was her Rock Star made an appearance in this book and they finally hooked up. I was surprised how she just kinda "went with it" and didn't over think her decision like she normally does. I also enjoyed the new spin about learning more about Glory's past that she didn't even know about and I hope we keep on learning what else she has going on inside of her.The Real Vampire Series is one of my favorite. This was book number 8 and I would recommend this series to the paranormal romance fan who loves humor and HOT guys! 5/5 Sunglorry - See all my reviews This review is from: Real Vampires Hate Skinny Jeans (Paperback) Once again, Gerry Bartlett wrote an amazing book about our girl Glory St. Clare. The Walled Flower (Victoria Square Mystery)
Book (Berkley)
List Price: $7.99
A great follow-up to the series opener
The Walled Flower is the second book in the A Victoria Square Mystery series.Katie Bonner and her late husband had there hearts set on the old Webster mansion, at the the edge of Artisans Alley. But here husband invested all their savings in Artisans Alley and soon after was killed in a car crash. Now she is the owner of Artisans Alley and barely making a go of it.She comes to work one morning to find a young couple renovating the mansion that should have been hers. Katie swallows her pride and as president of the Victoria Square Merchant Association pays the couple a welcoming visit. The are busy tearing out walls and doing whatever, they themselves, can do to keep the costs down. They invite Katie to pick up a sledge hammer and take a couple whacks at a wall herself. A few good swings and she has put a hole in the wall, only to find human bones wrapped in plastic sheeting wedged between the studs. Rose, a vendor at Artisan's Alley, discovers among the... 5/5 F. This is the second book in the Victoria Square series and it starts out fast and never lets up. Katie finds herself in over her head with situations as disparate being pushed into becoming the Matron of Honor of a very demanding bridezilla, personality conflicts and accusations of theft in Artisans Alley, and murders 22 years apart but almost certainly related.Added to the mix are Detective Davenport, whose people skills still leave a lot to be desired, a looming deadline to find new living quarters, and a boyfriend who refuses to let her move in to the apartment over his pizzeria. Oh, boy!The characters are really coming into their own in this one, particularly Katie who not only knows that she is taking on more than anyone could handle, but sticks to her commitments and sticks by her friends. Also, Rose, one of the Artisans Alley vendors, has center stage in this story and she's great! Katie Bonner always had her heart set on owning McKinlay Mill's charming Victorian inn, but when her late husband Chad rashly invested in Artisans "money pit" Alley, it wasn't going to happen. Katie would just have to settle for being the owner and manager of Artisan's Alley, a place where excitement happened only when one of her crafters was in a snit or last year when poor Ezra Hilton was bludgeoned to death at the bottom of a staircase. Katie had to admit that murder was good for business when every rubberneck in town showed up to look at *the* spot Ezra had sprawled on, but it was business she could do without. Now Polly Bremerton was picking on poor Edie Silver, a low-end crafter. Puh-lease, ladies!Katie had enough to contend with without having to be a referee at the latest cat fight at Artisans. She would soon be homeless if she didn't find an apartment to rent by the end of the month and gawd only knew why she accepted Gilda Ringwald's offer to be her Matron... 5/5 D. The New American Economy: The Failure of Reaganomics and a New Way Forward
Book (Palgrave Macmillan)
List Price: $28.00
How to Build a Better Conservative
It should be recalled that Bruce Bartlett was one of the primary advocates of supply-side economics in the late 70s and early 80s. In fact he was one of the main authors of the Kemp-Roth bill, which called for steep tax cuts in the top marginal income tax rates to spur economic growth. Ronald Reagan ran with this idea in 1980 and tax cuts were enacted into law a year later, thereby ushering in more than two decades of robust economic growth. In 1981 Bartlett wrote a book about this experience called .In his new book, The New American Economy, he tells us that supply-side economics has outlived its usefulness, at least for now. In the late 70's we had high taxes and high demand which caused inflation; today we have relvatively low taxes and also low demand, which causes deflation... 5/5 Izaak VanGaalen (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews, October 18, 2009Apologies in advance for the long-winded review
To say I was intrigued by a book subtitled "The Failure of Reaganomics" by one of its staunchest proponents is an understatement. I found an honesty in this writing I didn't expect, even if it comes across as somewhat self-serving at times.Mr Bartlett starts out with a retrospective on the Great Depression and John Maynard Keynes. He confesses that he grew up professionally as a Keynes detractor, only to come around later in his career to realize that Keynes wasn't the one-dimensional figure he'd spoken out against - his policies had merit for their day, and his later writings calling for a return to fiscal conservatism, had gone largely unnoticed by Keynes' followers as well as detractors, including himself. Mr Bartlett does an admirable job of resurrecting Keynes as a conservative who sought only to save liberal democracy in the most expedient way. A Crafty Killing (Victoria Square Mystery)
Book (Berkley)
List Price: $7.99
This is a fabulously flamboyant start to a new series!
Katie Bonner had to admit that a corpse was good for business. Everyone and his brother would come rushing into Artisans Alley to see the spot where Ezra Hilton had been bludgeoned to death. It was a good thing that Mary Elliot had found the old coot because frankly, she didn't have the stomach for that sort of thing even though "Artisans Alley--and Ezra--had ruined her marriage." Her dearly departed hubby, Chad, had invested in this "decaying money pit," and after his death she became Ezra's partner. Every last one of the vendors in Artisans considered themselves to be an undiscovered artist, including Peter Ashby in number sixty-four who dealt in "garden statuary," a quaint euphemism for cemetery statues. The ghouls would love his stuff and that X marks the spot hunk of carpet Detective Davenport, the `thank you, ma'am man,' had ripped up at the bottom of the stairs. After the "Did Mr. Hilton have any enemies?" bit was over Katie had to calm down, pop a peppermint,... 5/5 D. Katie Bonner is a great new heroine in the cozy mystery genre. The supporting characters are also believable and interact with Katie and each other in a realistic manner. (In some cozies the interaction between characters is a bit off!) It is also refreshing that Katie's romantic interest isn't a policeman, PI, lawyer, etc. Another enjoyable element is the entire setting of the book, the craft cooperative. What a neat idea! I've read the Booktown mysteries and loved them and the Jeff Resnick mysteries and loved them and with A Crafty Killing, the first book in the Victoria Square Mystery series I am not let down. Lorraine Bartlett came through with a solid plot and interesting characters. One thing that appealed to me was how Ms. Bartlett slowly unveiled her characters' background and personalities so there were surprises all through the book, even with Katie Bonner, the lead in the story. Kate jumps to conclusions a time or two and isn't always right on in her assessment of people, but as time goes on she does get things right and shows that she has a generous heart.I acquired this book yesterday and couldn't put it down until I turned the last page, where there are three delicious sounding recipes. There are two cats in the book, Mason and Della and I am hoping in future books to the series they will have a bigger part in the plot. Although, Della did play a pivotal role in the showdown. I... 5/5 N. Roessner "CoffeeBreak" (USA) - See all my reviews, October 6, 2011 -

4/5 R. 5/5 Loyd E. More Miraculous Info from the Matrix Energetics Guru
First of all, this book is fun and uplifting. If you're familiar with Richard's classes on Matrix Energetics, it's impossible to not love this book. From the first page it put me in Seminar State, where life gets weird but it's okay--good okay, because as Richard explains, that weird state is where miracles originate. To enjoy this book, though, it isn't necessary to be familiar with Matrix Energetics. There is plenty here to engage your mind and heart, empower your thoughts and supercharge your life. It's as provocative as it is entertaining, and he makes even the most complex theories accessible. Lynne McTaggart's books help a lot when it comes to published studies on, and the physics behind the miracles that happen all around us. Still, there's nothing even remotely like Richard. He is that far ahead. For example, to explain how the Newtonian, reductive approach has kept us from really understanding life, he points out how different it is to know about a frog... 5/5 Janet Holmes "Pet_Yank" (Gloucester, MA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I purchased this book to expand my Matrix Energetics skills and experience. From the first chapter I gained further insight into how to play in the matrix. This is how I used Matrix this morning. A friend was worried about her friend. The intention was to become less worried. I was drawn to touch 2 points on her body. I then asked her to touch her heart and allow God's love to flow into it. Then we talked about how alone she feels without her friend. After that she felt better. The hard drive on my computer was wobbling. I placed 2 hands on the computer--felt love for the computer in my heart--in my imagination went in to the hard drive and oiled it. 5 minutes later the hard drive acted normal. The book is filled with experiences like these. Simply by reading this book you can learn to play in the Matrix. When you increase love in your heart--you are opened up to a greater range of possibilities. What I especially liked about this book is that it expands and... 5/5 F. Its interesting to read a book that you feel like you are a part of. I wondered does this really represent where we are and what we are doing now? It's a good question and one that is hard to answer, especially when talking about Matrix Energetics which by it's very nature, being a transformational "consciousness technology," is always in a state of flux. But this flexibility is what I love the most about ME and why I am an avid fan and practitioner. For anyone who has read the first book you may feel like you were handed the fundamentals for a pretty cool technique but ME is so much more than a one point two point technique; it is a constantly expanding field of information and potential that is realized and defined by the individual who is accessing it without being defined by ones personal limitations. Where the first book dipped into some of the ideas behind ME this book dives into the ever expanding field of ME and some of the more complex scientific principles that... 5/5 Justice E.
