Betsy Ross, Patriot of Philadelphia

Creator: Judith St. George, Sasha Meret | Biography & Autobiography - 1997-11-15

The personal struggles of the woman generally credited with having created the first American flag are set against the backdrop of the colonists' fight for independence.

Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)

About this book
In the spring of 1776, George Washington stopped at Betsy Ross's little upholstery shop and asked her to sew a flag-- a flag that would unite the thirteen colonies in their fight for independence from Great Britain. In Judith St. George's detailed account, Betsy Ross emerges as a strong and spirited woman. Her independent streak led her to marry outside her Quaker faith and served her well throughout her life: widowed three times and the mother of seven daughters, she maintained her own business for more than fifty years. Here is the inspiring story of one of the courageous and self-reliant women who shaped American history: the "patriot of Philadelphia" who created the banner that helped unite the nation.

    The book of my dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the book but the title is wrong. Betsy Ross really wasn't the designer of the flag. She was just asked to sew the flag because of her great talent in sewing. I read this book because I went to the Betsy Ross house and thought she was really cool. When I read this book, I felt like I really knew her. She is so interesting having 3 husbands and surviving through the war between the British troops and George Washington's Continental army. I think that I'd like to know about her later life more. 5/5 0, November 12, 1998

    EXCELLENT

I READ THIS BOOK TO MY 7 YEAR OLD SHE HAS A GREAT LOVE FOR HISTORY AND SHE HAS REQUESTED EVEN MORE ON BETSY ROSS DUE TO THIS BOOK SHE LOVED IT! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A START ON THE JOURNEY TO OUR HISTORY. 5/5 0, August 12, 1999

    Not Helpful

This book was not very helpful in doing my biography report. It spends too much time talking about her life as a 6 year old, and not enough time talking about making the flag. Also, Betsy Ross didn't design the flag -- she sewed the flag. This book was originally written almost 50 years ago and is seriously in need of updating to relate to today's readers. 1/5 0, March 15, 2000

An oversized leaflet, not a book!

This was a nice little pamphlet for getting to know the basics about Betsy Ross, but it's so small I don't consider it a real book. I was disappointed. I bought this for my 4th grader, and this was way below her reading level with lots of pictures. 3/5 Heather "Mom of Two" (Saratoga Springs, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Adorable for kids as young as three!

Went and heard the author read this book at a local library. The kids all sat enthralled as the whole book was read. Great rhyming and rhythm throughout the story, I would highly recommend this book for children 3-8 years old. We did the fold-and-cut star activity as shown in the back of the book and it gives kids a fun little skill in making a five-pointed star. Revealing read about a fascinating woman in early America!

Marla Miller has the ability to ignite a passion underfoot for her historical actors and the lives they lived. At times, one almost forgets this is an academic professor writing a heavily researched biography of a woman we all seem to hear about, but no one really knows. Through what must have been many long hours in the archives, Miller weaves together the story of a typical Philadelphia woman coming of age in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Miller's diligent research reveals to us not only the life of this female artisan, working woman, and loving family member. From her writing we also get an understanding of the upholstery trade in early America and how crucial upholsterer's work became as the Patriot cause strengthened. As a demand for flags arose, so did that for tents, army blankets, cots, and various other camp equipage related to the skilled work of a trained upholsterer such as Betsy Ross was in the early years of the rebellion. Betsy's story continues... 5/5 Lulu A. History as seen through the eyes of ordinary people

Normally when I review a book, I first read the book and write my review, then I read reviews written by other people. In the case of "Betsy Ross and the Making of America", my introduction to the book was via a review in the "New York Times Book Review" dated May 9, 2010. It was not a flattering review. The reviewer, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, a professor at Harvard, accuses the author, Marla R. Miller, a professor of American History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, of "sentimental fiction" which "weakens her own historical prose, which is strong enough to stand on its own" and "defeats the ultimate purpose of her book, which is to rediscover the woman behind the legend." Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the fact that, other than books for children, this is the first biography of Betsy Ross ever written. Intrigued enough to buy and read the book despite the poor review.By the end of the first chapter, I had forgotten about the scathing review and was... 5/5 OldRoses (NJ) - See all my reviews, June 17, 2010

a rich and well-crafted work, with every page a pleasure!

It may come as a surprise to many that until now, we have had no book-length scholarly biographies of Betsy Ross. The good news is it was worth the wait. Marla R. Miller's masterful work reveals a complex, powerful and passionate woman living through the tumultuous birth of a nation. The woman we know as Betsy Ross was a Quaker who left her church, a Revolutionary, a wife who buried two husbands killed in war, and an artist and business-owner who moved in circles that included the man who would become the nation's first president. She is also, of course, the woman who gave us what may be our nation's single most recognizable symbol. Miller digs deep, carefully peeling away layers of myth to reveal a woman who is more fascinating than anything we might have invented. A rich and well-crafted work, with every page a pleasure. 5/5 a reader (Amherst, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Betsy Ross and the Making of America (Hardcover) It may come as a surprise to many that until now, we have had no book-length scholarly biographies of Betsy Ross. The pictures make it look younger than it actually is....

I bought this for my second-grader because she had to do a report ona famous American. The pictures were great, but it had a lot of informationin it that she wasn't familiar with yet such as "Quakers", "Colonists", etc.I was looking for a very elementary intro to Betsy Ross, but this wasa little too old for her. I read it to her, but since she hasn't studiedthe revolution, colonial America, etc. it was over her head and she thoughtit was boring. The pictures are great and it would be perfect for a child inat least third grade....or any child who understands a little about the foundingof our country. 3/5 D. A Beginning for Betsy

This is a quick read focusing on Betsy Ross's childhood. Young Betsy wants to do carpentry just because one of her brothers tells her she can't. But she's not cut out for the task, nor is that where her passion lies. What she's really good at is embroidery. This is a cute story about being true to yourself. The only problem is, the book doesn't give any indication of how accurate the account is. There is a page at the end that mentions Betsy's accomplishments as an adult, but this is not the resource to use if you are looking for a biography. 4/5 E. Kennen (Georgia) - See all my reviews, March 12, 2011

    Frankly backwards fiction.

The message in this book is supposed to be "be true to yourself", but it actually comes out as "girls aren't allowed to do boy things like carpentry, they have to do girl things like sewing". This, despite the book being written in 2002!And don't give me that "times were different back then" nonsense. The real Betsy Ross sewed uniforms and blankets, and filled musketballs as well. There were women in the army during the Revolution, albeit not very many and mostly in disguise. And given that this story is COMPLETELY MADE UP, it would have been just as easy to write a different made-up story with a different message.Yes, you heard me, completely made up. It is fiction. And I can prove it. How? Because the whole story starts when 6-year-old Betsy's brother George tells her that she can't help make a table, it's a boy thing. (Her mother's response is to tell her "You like sewing, why don't you sew with me?" instead of telling her son to stop squabbling.) But George... 1/5 Ulyyf "Connie" (NYC) - See all my reviews This review is from: Betsy Ross and the Silver Thimble (Childhood of Famous Americans) (Paperback) The message in this book is supposed to be "be true to yourself", but it actually comes out as "girls aren't allowed to do boy things like carpentry, they have to do girl things like sewing". Timeless Classic

If you're a history guy like me then you'll totally value the beauty of the Betsy Ross American Flag which features the stars laid out in a circle. From what I've read, the design was not first seen until the 1790's. I ended up buying a straight up modern Old Glory as well, but really I prefer this one to the 50 stater. It's simpler and more dignified. In my view it happens to be the most picturesque of our early flags and it honors my wall. Further, 2008 is an important year for our country. I think it is essential that those of us who recall the past with admiration and fondness express openly our devotion to this magnificent nation. The one thing I'll share here is that this flag is not rugged enough (its polyester as opposed to nylon) for daily outdoor usage. If you want to get something to swing from the back porch then you're going to have to throw down about 40 bucks based on what I've seen. That may be worth it though as the pattern is immaculate and... 5/5 Bernard Chapin "Ora Et Labora!" (CHICAGO! USA) - See all my reviews, March 26, 2008
