Rails Across Canada: The History of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways

    two great books into one

This is two books into one, with a section each for both CN and CP. The great photos are worth the price of the book alone. American readers might be surprised in how much both companies figure in US rail history including Grand Trunk and Illinois Central both owned north of the border. Hopefully, some time soon, all North American railways will get back into the passenger business, it just might start making money for them, and anything beats being in a sardine can. 5/5 JOHN DUROSE (Albuquerque, NM USA) - See all my reviews, May 11, 2011

Great way to learn about railroads "North of the Border"

Rails Across Canada provides a comprehensive history of the Canadian Pacific (CP) and Canadian National (CN) Railways.Living in the United States, my knowledge of railroad history north of the border has been quite limited. Since the 1990's, the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National both have expanded into the United States and become more frequent visitors on US railroads. The new title Rails Across Canada brings together the two previously published titles from the Railroad Color History on the CP and CN into one combined volume. The book by Tom Murray is illustrated by more than 300 photographs sourced from the national archives and private collections. The variety of photographs provides a visual history illustrating the highlights of both systems. I particularly enjoyed the items from the authors collection including vintage timetables.I enjoyed learning about the railroad and political history of these lines which is covered in... 5/5 Gene Bowker (Aiken, SC) - See all my reviews, April 5, 2011

Simply a repackaging of two older books!

This would be a great book if it were an original publication. However, it simply repackages two already published older books in one volume. And if you already have those other books on the CP and CN, you merely get a duplicate, without even an update. I feel cheated, that's why I give it one star only. As it comes with a different cover and completely different title, how can one see that it's nothing new; what a turn-off to buy other books from this publisher. 1/5 Robert K. "Canadian Pacific ... Randolph Scott ... 20th Century Fox"

20th Century Fox presents "CANADIAN PACIFIC" (1949) (94 mins/Cinecolor) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Jane Wyatt, J. Carroll Naish, Victor Jory & Nancy Olson --- Directed by Edwin L. Marin and released in April 4,1950, our story line and filmed on location in the Canadian Rockies, this grand adventure western gives an account of the building of the Canadian Pacific railroad. Tom Andrews is a rough-and-ready surveyor who learns that fur trapper Dirk Rourke perceives the Canadian Pacific as a threat to his livelihood. Rourke foments an Indian uprising which very nearly destroys the railroad. But Andrews and his hardy band persevere. An exciting piece of filmmaking, evocatively photographed in Cinecolor by Fred Jackman Jr. --- From 1945 until 1962 when he retired, Randolph Scott made a series of good adult themed westerns, some of them considered real classicsUnder Edwin L. Moving tribute to Canadian Pacific

Canadian Pacific is one of those legendary names in transportation, a company with an impressive history, which, at the height of its influence billed itself "The World's Greatest Travel System". Prolific author Greg McDonnell delivers a tasteful tribute to this historic company that, in an era of bland mega-railroads, has not been afraid to celebrate its employees and its history. The "Craigellachie" in the book's title refers to the location where, in 1885, CPR official Donald Smith drove the ceremonial last spike that symbolically uniting eastern and western Canada. The name came from a place in Scotland that had historical significance to Mr. Smith and his cousin, then-CPR president George Stephen. It might help to say what this book is not: it's not a comprehensive history of the entire Canadian Pacific Railway, although the volume contains historical content including many excellent photos from the post WW2 era. Nor, despite the title of the first chapter, is it an... 5/5 Bill Hough (San Jose) - See all my reviews, June 2, 2010

A wonderful photographic record of the CPR.

To have a good eye in photography means not only taking pretty pictures but more importantly taking photographs that tell a story, that provide context and that make the viewer think. Mr. McDonnell's photographs do all those things. They are a wonderful photographic history of the CPR. And like any good photographer, Mr. McDonnell finds wonderful stories in the detail; the small things that tell the bigger story. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the CPR, in railways in general or in photography. Bravo Mr. McDonnell. 5/5 GrayCam (Canada) - See all my reviews This review is from: Canadian Pacific: Stand Fast, Craigellachie!
