    Crescent planet, crescent moonrise

  • Aug 18, 2010 from cranelake(Cranelake) in Science
cranelake Oh. My. Another lovely, stunning Cassini image: A thin crescent Enceladus rising over the sunlit cloud tops of Saturn: What a sight! As the spacecraft rounded into the dark side of Saturn, it turned back toward the planet (and the far more distant Sun).

    The crescent and the plume

  • Apr 04, 2012 from Diggful(Tookie) in Science
Diggful With planetary pictures, angle is everything. If you have your back to the Sun and face your target, it’s fully lit, and looks like a disk. But if you go around to the other side, and put your target between you and the Sun, it becomes a crescent. Get the angle just right, and that crescent gets very thin…

We are always reaching for this

I currently work at an agricultural sales and service business and we bought this set for quickly tossing into the truck when we needed to go fix something. It works well for that but we also have found it's almost easier to grab this case just in the shop rather than running back and sifting through the toolbox to find the right tool. Now you have to consider what you are going to use this set for. For most people it will be good enough quality for their jobs. Great set for a DIY mechanic. Now if you're a long time professional mechanic who's got the money, buy yourself some snap-on stuff; for the rest of us, it'll work good enough.Lots of tools and are very well organized. Plenty of sockets and enough wrenches to get you by (all the usual, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and some metric, I can't remember what other sizes). My major cons with the product is the plastic case. The case folds open with the top two "wings" folding out exposing all the tools... 5/5 Dillon D Barnes (Kansas, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Crescent CTK170CMP Mechanics Tool Set, 170-Piece (Tools & Home Improvement) I currently work at an agricultural sales and service business and we bought this set for quickly tossing into the truck when we needed to go fix something. The best overall tool set i've owned

This is my 4th crescent set I've owned. This set has everything you could need for most repairs on automobiles, it is my standard issue tool box when headed to the you-pull-it junkyards. Only complaint is the clips used to close the 2 door halves to the plastic case will eventually wear and break. But the tools are high quality. The 1/2" ratchet has taken some nice abuse with a 3 foot long cheater bar to losen rusted 3/4" hitch bolts at the junkyard. A great kit for the back of any vehicle. 5/5 D. Broncheau (Spokane WA) - See all my reviews, March 30, 2009

    NICE!!!!!!!!!

I already own this set for myself and just purchased two sets for other family members for Christmas. This is an awesome and very durable set especially for the money. I have owned other sets that were somewhat more expensive but just did not compare with the quality of this set. I would reccomend this set to anyone who is a do it yourselfer or is looking for the perfect gift for the professional. You will not be disappointed in your purchase. I have used this set for numerous applications from inside the home to farm use on tractors and equiptment as big as bulldozers and have yet to break anything in this set. Note a little care and clean-up afterwards always helps with any tools no matter what, but if you are mechanically minded you already know this. Ladies this is a perfect gift for the man in your life. 5/5 Joseph R. Driggers "J.R. Driggers" (South Carolina) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2009

    Best Kit Ever!

Being a farmer, I need a good set of tools that is easy to carry with me everywhere I go and has what I need in it so I don't have to drive back to the shop to get it. This set has it all! Of all the sets I have owned over the years, this Crescent set has been tha absolute best. I have used it to build a carousel, fix the tractors, adjust the doors in our market, you name it. All if the tools inside cover all the bases. I highly recommend it!! 5/5 Dennis M. Norton (Harvard, IL United States) - See all my reviews, December 8, 2005

Crescent Mechanics Tool Set - 148 Piece

The kit works well for our application (large system electronics repair). We have only noticed one problem. When you pull the socket bits out of the driver, the magnet breaks off and can be lost. Out of the 9 kits that we purchased 4 of them have broken. Over all we are happy with the product, but have sent back the bit driver for exchange. 3/5 Corey P. A delight for all the senses

Diana Abu-Jaber's lush tale of cooking, love, longing, and exile set against the US's ongoing conflict with Iraq stirs the soul and totally fills the senses.Crescent is a love story between an L.A.-born and -bred, green-eyed, half-Arab blonde chef and an exiled Iraqi intellectual with a mysterious past. Interwoven into the Sirine and Han's love story is the fable of Abdelrahman Salahadin, told by Sirine's uncle, the gently devoted man who raises her after her parents are killed overseas when Sirine is nine years old. Both Abdelrahman's destiny and Sirine and Han's love unfold amid lush surroundings, complete with the heady aromas of Middle Eastern food and the fragrance of the mejnoona tree, which blooms behind the busy café where Sirine works.Anyone who appreciates either good food or a good love story will find Crescent an absolute delight. Delightfully Delicious....

The scents, scenes and stories from this book will follow me for the rest of my life. I felt somehow changed inside when I finished the last page---enlightened and educated about Middle Eastern people and in awe of their myths, food and lives. I came away changed, enchanted and wanting to visit the Baghdad of Han and Sirine's story. Ms. Abu-Jaber has woven a beautiful, intricate, sweet-scented tale of love, food, families and life. The descriptions of the food made such an impression on me that I went and found some of the recipes from the story to make for myself so I could experience the flavors and make them my own. I highly recommend this book...I wish that all Americans could read this to better understand the culture of the Middle East. 5/5 Marion "dragonfly80@hotmail.com" (Louisiana) - See all my reviews, July 17, 2003

"A crescent moonexquisite in its incompleteness"

Abu-Jaber's latest novel, Crescent, is a lyrical tale of love, family and tradition, peopled with characters of Arabian descent, who live in an enclave in the heart of Los Angeles, California. Whether Iranian, Lebanese, Iraqi or Jordanian, all have in common the longing to return to the homelands of their youth, impossible given the socio-economic and political changes of the last decades. The author speaks particularly to the Iraqi exiles, in a poignant portrayal of their memories, folktales and family connections. She does so in poetic phrases that remind this reader of the prolific Alice Hoffman, as page after page is filled with such deeply moving images, sounds and smells that Crescent redefines cultural stereotypes, allowing each individual his/her own identity. The most important ingredient in this tasty concoction is the Arab-American Sirine, a master cook of ethnic delicacies at Nadia's Café, a Lebanese establishment, where students and other patrons gather to... 5/5 Luan Gaines "luansos" (Dana Point, CA USA) - See all my reviews, May 4, 2004

Terrific tool set for an awesome price!

Great all around tool set with a quality finish. Combination wrenches feel great and are made to last. 3/8" and 1/4" Ratchet are also very well made. They come with a socket lock to prevent sockets from popping off like the old days. All sockets are easy to read and are listed in both metric and in inches. Case is well made and holds everything almost in place, excluding the sockets which are not securely in place. Despite other reviews case DOES come with black latches to lock the case, as seen in the photos. They are attached to the plastic wrap over the case. Just snap them on and your done. No instructions for snapping them on, only takes a second to figure out.The Crescent 70-piece tool set is probably the best bang for the buck, period. Mine was purchased for $49.12 on Amazon and it was absolutely worth every single penny. Must buy for those who already own pliers, adjustable wrenches, etc!Thank you Cooper Hand Tools! 5/5 Monte "Watch lover!" (Florida) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Tools fine, case a piece of junk

If you are looking for just the tools, this is an ok buy.The product packaging and storage case are total piece of junk though so if you want the tools and plan to use them often I suggest getting a better case. As noted in the other reviews there are fasteners to latch the case shut, but they come separately to be clipped into place (also junk imo as they are very cheap plastic which broke instantly). We ordered this as a Christmas present. As shown in the photo the item arrives open faced with a clear hard plastic screwed onto the surface. This clear cover however is super cheap plastic and arrived cracked; Upon opening our Amazon box pieces were sent everywhere since nothing was keeping them in tact...what a mess...pieces under tables, under the couch, one the cat batted off as a toy. We pieced it back together eventually after finding them all, but that was seriously annoying to have to even bother with if the packaging were at all thought through from a... 2/5 Kasanka Girl (Seattle) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Creepy cool Crescent!

I'm a horror/sci-fi reader who's very picky about the books I buy. So when I first heard about a free podcast novel called "Crescent," I jumped at the chance to listen. I mean, why not? It was billed as horror and sci-fi and it was FREE! As soon as I listened to the first chapter, I was in love. Phil Rossi's Crescent was the perfect blend of my favorite two genres. It was like Stephen King's "The Shining" meets "Battle Star Galactica." A haunted space station provides a nasty case of the chills, while a corrupt mafia-style politician and his psycho henchmen give the fear factor a wicked edge. It's practically a race between these two elements to see which one is going to lay waste to the main characters first. The writing is tight, the characters gritty, and the plot holds up well to the very end. All too often I've read horror books that fall apart once the monster is revealed. Not Crescent! What it promises, it delivers.Best of all, Crescent doesn't rely on... 5/5 Helen H. Madden "Heat Flash podcaster" (Yorktown, VA United States) - See all my reviews, July 9, 2009

    Riveting - A wild ride!

I'll be transparent - I haven't read much science fiction or horror. I just like a great story that sucks me in to a new world and keeps me intrigued and engaged. Crescent is amazing. I couldn't stop telling friends about it and I know my wife is done hearing me rave about the characters and story.Rossi has written a story that transcends the genre - in a similar way that Battlestar Galactica did. It's the first truly scary book I've read in years. And more than that- it's not just an in your face terror fest (don't get me wrong, it's totally that too), but a really phenomenal story, filled with lush details and characters you feel connected to on a level that I haven't experienced with ANY other book (honestly!). Maybe I expected too much

This tool does cut well, but not as well as I thought it would. This side cutters does cut wire fairly easy but is still inferior to the Greenlee Side cutters, in terms of ease of use. The spring is a nice feature but if you don't close it each time it is hard to get back in your plier pocket on your tool pouch. I may have been expecting a little much since it says "compound Leverage". 3/5 Brandon Giesinger (MN USA) - See all my reviews, December 14, 2007

    Stronger than I expected.

So I have to be honest, I bought these as my dirty/rough work diags in an effort to keep my Klein's sharp. I've been very surprised by these pliers. They even cut straight through a threaded conduit coupling without too much effort. I've had them for a couple years now, and the only thing wrong with them is that the rubber knob on the lock tab has fallen off. It's unusual for a diagonal cutter of this size to have such a fine pointed tip, which is wonderful for my uses. I use these daily on the job and if they ever break I'll likely buy another pair. 4/5 N. Greenia - See all my reviews, April 17, 2012

    Cheap materials, nice compound action

Used only a few times, the tip of one blade snapped off while nibbling on thin coathanger-gauge mild steel wire. The levered compound action of the grip is great though - allowed cutting of heavier gauges with less effort than standard grips, but I would not buy again. 2/5 D. The item is just what I wanted, and my husband was very pleased with it on Father's Day, and commented on the good quality of the product. Also, the item arrived very quickly. The only complaint I have is that I was charged for shipping, when it should have been "free shipping." 5/5 Ruth Leister (South Jordan, UT USA) - See all my reviews, June 26, 2009

    Can't believe I kept reading...

I'm as guilty as anyone in keeping the Dirk Pitt series alive (I haven't read much of Mr. Cussler's other series), because I keep coming back, like a battered wife or an abused Black Lab loyally slinking back to its master. Maybe it's because I don't know any better. Or maybe it's because I'm hooked ("Clive, I can't quit you!"). But most likely it's because Sahara, Dragon, Cyclops, and even Raise the Titanic! were books that made a junior-high me love to read. And now that I write books of my own for a living, I guess I owe a debt to those writers like Mr. Cussler who made me want to do what they did. While adoring athletes my whole life never got me into the big leagues, my love and loyalty for writers as far ranging as Cussler and Camus and Margaret Wise Brown DID get me somewhere...So that's probably why I read this book. All of that being said, Crescent Dawn is just awful. I mean, it is one of the worst books I've ever read. And that is the only reason I'm taking the... 1/5 Maddies Mom and Dad - See all my reviews This review is from: Crescent Dawn (Dirk Pitt Adventure) (Hardcover) I'm as guilty as anyone in keeping the Dirk Pitt series alive (I haven't read much of Mr. Cussler's other series), because I keep coming back, like a battered wife or an abused Black Lab loyally slinking back to its master. Cussler and son drowned by prior success

This book is what happens after a successful author spends years cashing in on a successful formula, runs out of ideas and (possibly abetted by the publisher) cannot even be bothered to do a decent job of editing. As an example of bad editing, consider that one character is in her twenties but has a mother aged 94.Other reviews will tell you plenty of things that are wrong with this book. I'll just add one more. With two main characters called Dirk, it would help to have something like a nickname to distinguish between references to the two characters.Frankly, if the senior Cussler wants to continue the franchise with his son successfully established as an author, he needs to tell his publisher to back off and he needs to slow down. He should spend a year or two working on the next book with his son and teaching him the craft properly. 1/5 David Emanuel (Tulsa, OK USA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2010

A new dawn for Dirk Pitt?

Dirk Pitt returns after a two-year hiatus, "Arctic Drift" (11/08). Several years ago another favorite author of mine Craig Thomas wrote a novel titled "All the Grey Cats." In it he brought together many of his older characters. Clive Cussler does that in "Crescent Dawn." It just feels comfortable to have Dirk, Rudi and Al back again. Publishers Weekly called it "bloated" but when you look at the four Dirk Cussler novels, they're all about 550 pages in length. The Cusslers pull out all the old cliches, but they still work for me. You will enjoy this one too. 5/5 Marcus A. Lewis (South El Monte, CA United States) - See all my reviews, November 18, 2010

"Sun Child and Moon Child" Postcard

moonchild, art, sunchild, sun, moon, fairy,
"Sun Child and Moon Child" - one of my favourite paintings to date, I love the colours in this one. Loosely inspired by the song "Moonchild" by King Crimson - these sisters stand together, but separately - representing the sun (on your left) and the moon (on your right). The sky & sea are both shown here reflecting the day/night dichotomy. Sun Child is cradling a chalice holding the light of the sun, and Moon Child carries a vessel containing the crescent moon. A rooster represents day/morning, and the moon-bunny is for the night. This is a piece I debuted & sold at Dragon*Con 2011 - originally it was in a really neat diptych (two-paneled) altarpiece frame that my husband Matt made for me. Even though the original has sold though, I have prints & other merchandise featuring these beauties! My own original acrylic painting.
