Fundamentals of Aerodynamics (Mcgraw Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering)
Book (McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math)

Excellent Aerospace Engineering Reference
This excellent book is full of examples and equations to help students relate to the fundamental concepts in an introductory aerodynamics class. The book is especially useful for reference, as it explains the derivations and many forms of complex equations such as the continuity equation. Furthermore, there are lots of examples of real-world design situations and historical backgrounds.Overall, one of the best books I have used in my undergraduate aerospace engineering curriculum. 5/5 George P. Great book for first and second semester aerodynamics. Especially the sections on supersonics and hypersonics. Links the technical and historical aspects of aerodynamics to give a very good global perspective of the subject. Anderson also provides "roadmaps" which tend to help the reader stay on track as to where the discussion is going. Those are especially helpful for technical books such as this one. 5/5 Nomy (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews This review is from: Fundamentals of Aerodynamics (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering) (Hardcover) This book is one of the best written books I have. Introduction to Aircraft Design (Cambridge Aerospace Series)
Book (Cambridge University Press)
List Price: $80.00
Practical guide to aircraft design
Many aircraft design books detail the 'how' of aircraft design. For example, determining the stall characteristics of a conceptual aircraft design. John Flemings' book introduces the 'why' of the aircraft design process. This book is a perfect companion to other aircraft design texts, like 'Aircraft Design-a conceptual approach' by Daniel Raymer 4/5 earl reyes (boise, idaho USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Introduction to Aircraft Design (Cambridge Aerospace Series) (Paperback) Many aircraft design books detail the 'how' of aircraft design. I consider this book to be a rough draft for a much larger book to come (I hope). The author just skims lightly through vast numbers of subjects, so that anyone who knows anything about airplanes will learn nothing new. Yet it isn't written on a basic enough level to have much to offer someone who knows nothing.Disappointing. 2/5 Charles T. Grayson (Memphis, TN USA) - See all my reviews, August 7, 2002Skimming the Surface
This book is a very general view from a very British perspective. I don't think it belongs in Embry-Riddle's graduate programs because it does not meet the needs of experienced professionals. As an undergraduate overview of the systems design process, it is good. However, the author does not even touch helicopters, seaplanes, or lighter-than-air-technology. So, the book would be more aptly named "Introduction to Airplane Design."Some of his information on armament systems is grossly inaccurate. Furthermore, the systems design process section does not reflect the current state of the art in the discipline of Systems Engineering. I expect improvement in the next edition and hope the author makes more of an effort to talk to engineers on the other side of the pond. 2/5 David J. Secrets of Antigravity Propulsion: Tesla, UFOs, and Classified Aerospace Technology
Book (Bear & Company)
List Price: $24.00
An Excellent Overview
"Secrets of Antigravity Propulsion" provides an excellent overview of the history of antigravity research over the past 100 years. LaViolette focuses primarily on the experiments conducted by Thomas Townsend Brown and Nikola Tesla, but also reviews the work of many others conducting research in the areas of electrogravitics, overunity levitation, gravity beam propulsion, microwave phase conjugation, and magnetic energy conversion. All of this research originated with experiments attempting to explain the unusual discharge effects of high voltage capacitors with heavy high-K dielectics. LaViolette uses the theory of subquantum kinetics to provide a theoretical explanation for the phenomena produced by these experiments. A theory based on "ether physics" and the notion that masses with polarized electric fields generate polarized gravity fields that result in gravity wells (attractive forces) and gravity hills (repulsive forces).LaViolette also investigates black... 5/5 Charles Malcolm (Toronto, ON CA) - See all my reviews, November 6, 2008The Real Data About Antigravity Propulsion, and the Government Paranoia to Prove It Works
I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but... there is just way to much information here into subquantum kinetics and electrogravitic propulsion systems that work to be validly discounted. It is pretty conclusive that gravity has polarity, and our current physics paradigm is insufficient to explain the results achieved. Experiments by Tesla, Brown, Searl and others also show that generators can be constructed that produce energy vastly in excess of the energy required to operate them. These experiments date back 60+ years, but once they went "black" under US Military control, no further information was available, that is until the B-2 bomber was unveiled. It seems the US government embraces subquantum kinetics, but keeps it secret, even though it would solve our energy problems, pollution, and global warming. The book delves into the "actual" propulsion of the B-2 which corresponds perfectly with the known research and experiments into electrogravitic... 5/5 Elliot Malach "The Unknown Surfer" (Galveston, Tx) - See all my reviews, September 10, 2008Interesting
Although the title is slightly misleading - yes, Tesla is mentioned a few times but his work is not explored in much depth - this is a very informative book. It is more or less a history book written by a scientist. It explores the work of T. Townsend Brown in some depth and examines The Searl Effect in some detail. Perhaps unfortunately, quite a bit of the information in this book is speculation because black ops projects are, by their very nature, extremely secretive.I must give credit where credit is due, however, because it is a very thought provoking book. One of the nice things about this book is that the appendices are well designed. Several patents are mentioned throughout the text and they are all listed in one of the appendices for easy reference and if you know where to look on the Internet you can download and study them yourself. 3/5 Brent M. Braten - See all my reviews, September 29, 2008 -

Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, Second Edition (Aerospace Engineering)
Book (Butterworth-Heinemann)
List Price: $104.00
A More "Engineering" Approach
Good book, but with typos here and there. There is an errata if you search for the book's website and most of the errors you can spot easily. What makes this book especially useful are the MATLAB functions, which allow you to implement the theory without having to debug newly written code (this is more time consuming, than difficult). This is however a beginner's book into orbital mechanics, but gets the job done if you want to sim a basic interplanetary mission relatively accurately. For a more refined approach with I would suggest "Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics" by Hughes. 4/5 N. Ibrahim "Senior Aerospace Undergrad" (Toronto) - See all my reviews, January 26, 2007good content, however!
The book contains good and applicable content for basic orbital mechanics. However, it is riddled with annoying typos and errors with no errata to be found. As an expensive textbook one would expect more care. 2/5 James M. Pothering - See all my reviews, November 26, 2006OK general text... get the second edition
Bought this book right before the second edition came out. Some of my classmates bought the second edition, so the class has a mixture of the two books. The professor is constantly pointing out errors and typos in this edition. There is supposedly an errata available, I have not yet found it. Aside from the practice problem and equation numbering, (and correcting the errors) the two editions are essentially the same.As a text, the explanations of phenomena and derivations of equations are well laid out and can be followed without too much difficulty if you have a good grounding in vector algebra. An understanding of calculus and ordinary differential equations also aids understanding. The MATLAB code found in the appendices is good and can be used as-is or as a starting point for writing your own. If you can get a .pdf of that appendix, though, it makes cut-and-paste-and-run a whole lot easier. My only other quibble is that the tables with planetary... 3/5 C. J. Advice to Rocket Scientists: A Career Survival Guide for Scientists and Engineers (Library of Flight Series)
Book (AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Ast)
List Price: $19.95
Great career advice!
I really enjoyed this book. It is brief, has short chapters, is easy to read and has plenty of humor. Trying to figure out what I should do, I have read a few carreer books myself but became exremely bored with them very fast, because they would just spend too much time with unnecessary information e.g. statistics/surveys to support their arguments and plenty of analysis. This book has non of that. If I had a chance to ask the authors of the other carreer books one question, it would be: So, what are you NOT telling me? This book is the answer to that. Having worked in the industry for several years, I am very confident to make this assesment. I can also say, that many of the tips in this book can be applied not only to the US but to Europe as well. 5/5 Christoph Wagner (Joliet, Il USA) - See all my reviews, March 6, 2004Useful Advice from a Rocket Scientist
|The author, Jim Longuski, is a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Purdue University. He also worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) for nine years, so he knows what he is talking about. This book grew out of a lecture that he gives to graduating seniors called "What Your Professor Never Taught You." The subject might be described as "career advice", but it is quite different from other books of that sort. The writing style is friendly and conversational, with lots of anecdotes and humor. I found it hard to stop reading.Broadly speaking, there are two parts to the book: "surviving and thriving in industry" and "thriving and surviving in academia." (Professor Longuski has done both.) Some of the chapter titles are: It Doesn't Take a Rocket Scientist to Be a Rocket Scientist.Does This Mean You Have to Kiss Butt? What if My Boss is Incompetent? Why You Need Two Resumes. How to Survive Your First Two Weeks on the Job.How to Give... 5/5 Michael Jokic (Adelaide, Australia) - See all my reviews, June 8, 2004An important reference book for any scientist or engineer
I have no hesitation in recommending that Advice to Rocket Scientists be a part of any professional's reference library. The principles and recommendations within this book have proved invaluable during my graduate studies and subsequent transition to the workplace. The book is a pleasure to read and full of helpful advice. I have found the section titled "How to Get the Right Job" particularly useful. The insight provided by Jim Longuski into the importance of the "Boss" has proven to be quite astute. Advice to Rocket Scientists is a unique source of sound instruction and useful suggestions presented in an entertaining and accessible format. 5/5 0, July 31, 2005 -
